We often hear the terms meditation and hypnotherapy used interchangeably, especially in wellness circles. Both invite us into stillness, guide us inward, and help us rewire how we relate to stress, emotion, and belief. But while they can feel similar on the surface, these two practices serve very different roles in the transformation journey.

Let’s break it down.

Meditation: Presence & Observation

Meditation is the art of being with what is.

Whether it’s a mindfulness breath practice, a mantra, or a loving-kindness visualization, meditation teaches us to observe our thoughts without becoming them. It strengthens the conscious mind — the part of us that makes intentional decisions, watches patterns, and holds presence.

When you meditate, you practice:

  • Awareness without judgment

  • Emotional regulation through stillness

  • Returning to the moment (again and again)

  • Softening the grip of reactivity

Think of meditation as the yin — quiet, expansive, open. A gentle observer of the storm.

Let’s take a sacred pause now and highlight one of my favorite meditation teachers

Hypnotherapy: Change from Within

Hypnotherapy is the art of communicating directly with the subconscious.

In a deeply relaxed state, like a guided trance, you’re led to uncover and rewire patterns, beliefs, and root memories stored beneath conscious awareness. These are the parts of you that might say:

“I know I’m safe now, but my body still feels like I’m not.”
“I want to believe I’m worthy, but something keeps pulling me back.”

Often these limiting beliefs and statements that we believe are truth come from a moment in childhood. Sometimes these are big moments that we kinda knew would have a lasting impact. But what I find interesting are the deeply rooted truths that happen from small moments that we find non-impactful at the time.

In hypnotherapy, you:

  • Dive beneath the critical mind to access the root of habits

  • Install new beliefs through subconscious suggestion

  • Create symbolic experiences (like healing gardens or inner temples) that your nervous system can feel as real

  • Shift how your brain and body respond to triggers

Think of hypnotherapy as the yang, active, intentional, and directed toward transformation.

Key Differences at a Glance

Can They Work Together?

Absolutely.

I often say meditation prepares the ground, while hypnotherapy plants the seeds.

If you know me well, you know I love a good gardening metaphor. One of the reasons why typical affirmations do not actually work, is because we are trying to plant seeds in a ground that isn’t fertile. If you are a church goer in the south, I know you know what I’m talking ‘bout. the pastors told us about this, but were we really listening?

But here is the powerful thing.

Meditation helps you notice the weed. Hypnotherapy helps you pull it out and plant something nourishing in its place.

If you find that you have a “monkey mind” don’t worry you are not alone and the noise that monkey makes is actually the compass, it is the medicine. You just have to allow yourself to listen to what it is telling you and why it is telling you vs. trying to follow the flow of the thought.

For my clients (and myself), integrating both creates a powerful rhythm:

  • Meditate to listen (what is coming up for me at the surface)

  • Hypnotherapy to rewire (finding the root of the surface/symptoms)

  • Reflect and integrate with journaling, movement, or creative expression

If meditation is the practice of stillness, hypnotherapy is the practice of change.

They both honor your inner wisdom, but one helps you meet yourself, and the other helps you transform from within.

Both are so important on your journey of coming home to yourself.

You don’t have to choose between them. Instead, ask:
What support do I need right now?
Presence? Or pattern shift?
Witnessing? Or rewiring?

Both are valid. Both are powerful. And you, love, get to choose your path.
